‘The Judgment’, a short movie made using the Artificial Intelligence or AI, that depicts the devastation of wars made by two young film enthusiasts was released via online. ‘The Judgment’ is a collaboration by two young film lovers Hiran Gamage and Lakshan Perera.

Directed and edited by Lakshan and the screenplay written and produced by Hiran, the film was launched via the online platform, ‘Filmfreeway’. (https://filmfreeway.com/projects/3471121).

The film opening with a friendly conversation between a beautiful young woman and a retired military officer, who meet by chance on a night train in Canada, the story reveals information about a unique past event that changed the fates of both of them in two directions.

The cinematic venture using the new AI technology is an effort by young film enthusiast Lakshan and Hiran who studied cinema at Asian Film Academy Sri Lanka (AFA).
With a tagline ‘War never produces a winner’, the film brings a strong message against wars.

Studied at the Asian film Academy and mastered screen writing at the Screen Writers Guild of Sri Lanka, Hiran works at film production houses and trained under veteran filmmaker Chandran Rutnam.

‘I have been actively working in Sri Lankan film industry as a freelance filmmaker. And I was trained under the guidance of veteran Sri Lankan filmmaker Chandran Rutnam, whom I consider as my Guru’ said Hiran with a note of gratitude.

‘Actually this film is a tribute to Mr. Rutnam who is my mentor’ he added.

“While writing the screenplay and dialogue, I also wanted to learn the role of a film producer. That is why I wanted to join Lakshan in this film,” he said.

Speaking on using AI instead of the traditional art of filmmaking Hiran said that they used it because it is an innovative platform and they wanted to do something new.

‘As a result of the current rapid technological revolution and intellectual revolution, artificial intelligence technology is being applied in almost every subject area in various ways. So as Sri Lankans, it is worth considering even thinking about examining the application of AI technology to the film industry’ he said.

‘The film’s visuals were created using Luma Dream Machine, Pollo A.I., Mini Max and Leonardo A.I., and Suno A.I. for creating the background music and composing the theme song. It can be seen that the technical source of Music has also been used’ Hiran explained.

Film director Lakshan Perera has also been groomed by veteran filmmaker Mr. Rutnam

While actively working in film industry as a freelance filmmaker Hiran studied on his own using AI for filmmaking. He now takes up freelance work as a director, cinematographer and a film editor.

The 20-minutes film is to represent Sri Lanka at several international film festivals in several categories. They include Neuro Masters AI Film Festival – Best AI Film and Best Social AI Film, Purple Sky International Film Festival – Best Experimental Film, Liverpool Indie Awards – Best Experimental Short Film and Reply AI Film Festival – General category.
